tishes theory lesson- thursday 26th march 2015

In this lesson tish talk to use about what is meant by feminism

Wertenbaker who wrote the love of the nightingale was a famous feminist, she has spoken about being `silenced` because of the popularity and dominance of men within the industry
we spoken about where women are not treated fairly
for example we came up with a few countries that still suffer from this still for example Africa/ America/ cultures, china- 1 child rule, they preferred the baby to be boys so they could work and keep the name going within there families.

Wertenbaker- silences women but she shows the women standing up for themselves/ disempowerment- not allowing the men to rule them.
Philomele is a feminist because she shows what happened to her and she still try's to communicate even thought she hasn't got a tongue and she still will show her face after being raped as she wants to show what really happened to her. Philomele doesn't give up she carry's on trying to prove them all a point and uses things to show what happened to her.

She shows that women are just as capable as men and what a man can do a female can to (Feminist) she shows this throughout the script when she shows the relationship between the captain and Philomele. At first the captain wont speak to Philomele but then he does because he starts getting feeling for Philomele, but just because Philomele is a female and unprotected he didn't really want to know, but because Philomele was a female he starts flirting with her and allows this to happen as he talks back to Philomele in a flirty way. This shows that the captain though he was to important to be speaking to her and he knew that if he got found with her then he would get into big trouble.

Also through out the play we see feminism - male figures in the play have more dominants than the women.
We see this when tereus is speaking to the nurse then after she finishes talking he says "terrible advice". This shows that tereus doesn't listen to women.
also in the play tereus says "don't pity her" this also shows that he don't pity women as he don't think anything of them he just uses them as a thing rather than a women.
Through out the play after Tereus rapes Philomele he try's to hide it saying it was her fault that he did it. this also interlinks with the dominates of men.
In this lesson we also looked at what was meant by (male dominants) I came up with the words
rebellious- there not bothered the males in the play they just rule women especially tereus.
power- over the women especially the men.
pressure- the men pressure the women, as seen when tereus rapes Philomele. tereus makes out that what ever he says goes, what anyone else has to say he don't care about. he's always in the right.

The other things I found interesting about this particular lesson, talking about feminism was that we don't really come to terms with it like we know its happening all around the world but nothing is been done to prevent it as I think the reason for this is that people who deal with all this stuff ither believe it or they just don't want to stand up and say listen that wrong we should all have the same rights, but when we think about it like that do mean have a different role than women, or the other way around, nobody has ever talked about this politically because if they did then maybe something could have been done already.

However the things I learnt from this lesson was that women are definitely treated unfairly to men and some men think its right. many people would argue the fact that if a man is married to a women then what the man says goes in the relationship, however there could be other views for example the same sex getting married, if two girls got married would this be the same in the role would one of them dominate the other, the answer I think would be no.because they are both females and it just wouldn't happen so why does it happen to females with males especially in some cultures as I talked about before, why is this happening? what is the cause of this ? do they have to be this way to go with the expectance of there culture? they born that way, did there parents do it, so they think if they did it then it must be acceptable.
